South Korea holds an unusual place on the Asian poker map: the country bars its own citizens from its casinos, which are reserved for foreign visitors. That rule, unique in the region, shapes the whole local scene — the big festivals draw an international field, largely Japanese, Taiwanese and Chinese.

Almost all of the activity is at Incheon, on the edge of Seoul, where the Paradise City complex sits beside the international airport. That is where the Korean leg of the APPT, PokerStars' Asian tour, is played, over programmes of around ten days.

Buy-ins are quoted in South Korean won, whose scale can surprise: a ₩1,100,000 tournament is roughly €700. Don't read the order of magnitude as you would a European currency.

Frequently asked questions

Who is allowed to play in South Korean casinos?

Foreign visitors only. Of the country's seventeen casinos, just one (Kangwon Land) admits Korean nationals. A foreign passport is therefore required to enter Paradise City, as at the other venues.

What currency are Korean tournaments played in?

South Korean won (KRW). The figures look large — a typical buy-in runs to six or seven digits — but 1,000 won is about €0.65.

Where is live poker played in South Korea?

At Paradise City in Incheon, next to Seoul Incheon International Airport. It is the venue for the Korean leg of the APPT.
