Brazil is by some distance the largest live poker scene in Latin America. The country has no casinos at all: gambling has been banned since 1946, and it is poker's recognition as a SPORT that allows tournaments to be held legally, in hotels and convention centres rather than gaming floors.
That quirk shapes the Brazilian festival. The BSOP — Brazilian Series of Poker — moves into a resort or business centre for a week, sometimes lays out more than a hundred tables, then packs up again. Six stops make up the season, from São Paulo to the coast of Bahia, and turnouts rank among the largest on the world circuit.
Buy-ins are quoted in Brazilian reais, which makes the figures hard to read against European events at first glance: a R$ 7,000 Main Event is around €1,100. Structures are generous and multi-flight formats the norm, much like the big American festivals.

Is poker legal in Brazil?
Yes. Games of chance have been banned since 1946, but poker is recognised as a game of skill and a sport by the Ministry of Sport, which permits tournaments. They are therefore held in hotels and convention centres rather than casinos — the country has none.
What currency are Brazilian tournaments played in?
Brazilian reais (BRL). PokerMap shows the currency code rather than a symbol, as "R$" is not widely recognised outside Brazil.
Where are the BSOP stops held?
Mainly at the WTC Sheraton in São Paulo, which hosts three of the six stops, with resorts taking the rest: Costão do Santinho in Florianópolis, Rio Quente Resorts in Goiás, and Sauípe Resorts on the Bahia coast.
What is the minimum age to play in Brazil?
Eighteen, with photo ID or a passport at registration.
